Robert Fielder was born on September 30, 1915 in Winters, Texas. He graduated from Abilene High School and received his Bachelor's degree from Texas Te ch in 1937. He completed his Master's degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1952. Dr. Fielder's first teaching job was in Spur, Texas in 1937. After two years at Spur, he took the band job at Phillips, Texas where he taught until the outbreak of World War II. He joined the Navy and served with distinction until 1946. Discharged, he moved back to Abilene to work with his father in the lumberyard business, and helped Raymond Bynum with the band program at Abilene High School. In 1946, Bynum left Abilene High to become band director at McMurry College and Dr. Fielder became band director at Abilene High School. Fielder's bands were outstanding, and his marching bands were acclaimed by all. He remained as band director until 1962, and then he moved into administration.
