Jeff Laird is in his second year as Director of Secondary Performing Arts for the Aldine Independent School District in Houston, having spent the previous eighteen years as Director of Bands at Aldine High School. He served the two years before that as Assistant Band Director also at Aldine High School. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education, a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Performance, and a Master of Music Degree in Music Performance, all from Lamar University in Beaumont. In 1996, he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Music Education and Conducting from The University of Houston. His doctoral dissertation is titled A History of the Texas All-State Bands from 1930 to 1995, reflecting his career-long dedication to our organization. Although his teaching career has been spent in Class 5A, his roots as a high school musician were planted firmly with the Kirbyville High School Band, then 2A, under the direction of Dr. Karl Wadenpfuhl. Under Jeff's direction, the Aldine High School Band was named "Outstanding Ensemble" at the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, "First Runner-Up" at the Six Flags Invitational Band Festival in Dallas, as well as "Grand Champion" on several occasions at Heritage Festival Band Contests in Orlando and Los Angeles. In April 2003, the Aldine High School Symphonic Band performed in the National Invitational Band and Orchestra Festival which is held annually at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Jeff is very active as a performer, clinician, and adjudicator. He has served TMEA as President, Vice-President and State Band Chair.
