Herb Teat was 81 when he passed away on July 23, 2004. He attended Hardin-Simmons University and then after the war graduated from North Texas State in 1948. He began his career in Rusk as a band director and later as a teacher of choral music. After graduate school at Westminster Choir College under the guidance of John Finley Williamson, he moved to Longview to teach choir and inspire students for 15 years. During this time, he served as State Vocal Chair and President of TMEA
In 1969, he went to Tarleton State University with the dream of “teaching teachers.” He spent 14 years at Tarleton State University where he had the opportunity to influence future music educators. He retired in 1983 and in 1999 moved to the Wesleyan Retirement Home in Georgetown. His enthusiasm and love of teaching touched the lives of thousands of students and inspired them to follow in his footsteps.
