Charlene Watson served as President of TMEA from 1982- 1983. Prior to that time she served as Elementary Division Vice- President from 1975-1977. Watson was the first Elementary Chair to ever serve as President of TMEA.

She attended her first convention in 1959, and at that time the Elementary Division met in the basement of the public library in Dallas. Only 30 elementary music teachers were present at that meeting. During her tenure in office, TMEA bought its first building in Austin.

Watson taught music in the Arlington school district. She coauthored an elementary curriculum, “Step Up to Musicianship,” which is still used in school districts across the country. In her 30- year career, she became the district’s lead music teacher who seized opportunities to mentor and recruit other music teachers. A fter retiring in the mid-1980’s she spent 12 years teaching music to preschoolers as a volunteer. In 2004, she was named the Star- Telegram Woman of the Year.
