Barbara Perkins, director of fine arts for the Abilene ISD, has been an employee of the Abilene ISD for 19 years. Barbara served as the choral director for Cooper High School for 16 years. She is a 1974 graduate of Hardin-Simmons University (Bachelor’s degree with a major in piano performance and music education) and earned a Master of Music Education degree from Texas Tech University in 1985. She served as the Texas Music Educators Association Vocal Vice-President from 1995-1997, after which she served as TMEA President-elect, President, and Past President from 1998-2000. Barbara was recognized as the outstanding teacher of Cooper High School in 1999 and was the recipient of the National Federation of Interscholastic Music Association Outstanding Music Educator State Award for the state of Texas in 2000. Barbara served on the University Interscholastic League Prescribed Music List committee for the past two editions of the PML, chairing the committee in 2002. In addition, Barbara has served as the choral director for the First Central Presbyterian Church of Abilene for the past fourteen years.
