Our Mission
MERN links successful music education professionals (advisors) with new Texas music educators (protégés) and offers a proactive program of one-on-one mentoring to each new music teacher for a minimum of one year.
Member Advisor Responsibilities
- Be available to serve as the organizational resource for the good of all current TMEA/MERN mentoring programs in a pro-bono capacity.
- Personally contact new teachers identified by TMEA, UIL, and school districts during fall region meetings to offer guidance in planning and facilitating their first year(s).
- Recognize and solicit new members, via the MERN Executive Committee, that are successful, experienced and willing music education professionals wanting to serve as advisors.
- Organize and coordinate, through the MERN Managing Director and the TMEA Deputy Director, a network of Area Coordinators that will be responsible for the organization of specific TMEA Regions and Divisions.
- Personally contact music education professors and their students in Texas colleges and universities to make them aware of what MERN has to offer.
- Observe classes and provide feedback on a bi-monthly basis to the new teacher (protégé) on teaching practices for teachers as requested.
- Be a champion and member of TMEA.
TMEA Contributions
- TMEA will support MERN by maintaining a database of new music teachers (protégés) during the TMEA/UIL Fall Region Meeting to be supplied to the MERN Managing Director.
- TMEA will forward any additional new teacher (protégé) information from their region to the MERN Managing Director and the designated Area Coordinator.
- TMEA will conduct a follow up survey prior to the school year by contacting local school music teachers, music supervisors, and the Region UIL Executive Secretary to identify additional names of new teachers (protégés) that were not identified during the fall meeting. They will forward those additional names to the MERN Managing Director and the designated Area Coordinator.
- TMEA Deputy Director will support the MERN Managing Director and the assigned MERN Area Coordinators in facilitating the pairing of a MERN advisor with a protégé.
