Handel - Zadok the Priest (posted 6/23)

Measures 23-29: Pure vowels, highly articulated consonants. In measure 24, baritones please sing B2 pitches (D naturals).

Measures 31-62: all eighth-note patterns must be changed to dotted-eighth/sixteenth-note patterns. All quarter notes and eighth notes should feel accented, with each decaying to create a buoyant style. (For instance, you’ll hear almost a small break between “re-“ and “-joiced.”) Tempo: about 108. Measure 60: breathe on beat 3. Keep the s’s very brief and crisp.

Please note these important changes: FOR THE CONVENTION, NOT AUDITIONS
1. Baritones will sing the B2 pitches in measures 79-80 and 92-94.
2. Women will be divided into three equal parts in measures 31-60 AT THE CONVENTION NOT AUDITIONS. For audition purposes, sing the parts as indicated in the score In measures 61-62, A2 should sing the A1 pitches AT THE CONVENTION NOT AUDITIONS.

Measures 63-121: The buoyant (decay) style is continued, but connect the consonants (for instance: “Go -- dsa -- vethe King”). We’ll stress “al-le-LU-jah, A-men” throughout. Breaths are where you’d expect: 69, 84, 92, 97, 111, 113, 118, and altos in 67. Tempo: 84-88. There are different kinds of phrasing that could be created for the sixteenth-note melismas, but I’ll simply ask that students arrive at the festival being able to clearly articulate each pitch, with a slight accent on the first of each four.
