Harry Barton
Harry Barton was born and raised in Winfield, Iowa, where he began his musical training. After completing both his bachelor and masters degrees at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, he began his teaching career in Thompson, Iowa. While there his band achieved statewide honors.
Harry moved to Dallas, Texas in 1938 and taught band and orchestra in several schools. He obtained a master of arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1942. He served three years in the service during World War II, much of that time as director of the 443rd Air Force band at Frederick and Enid, Oklahoma.
After his service duty he moved to the Highland Park Independent School District where he became Supervisor of Music, and helped organize and direct the Highlander Music Festival.
For many years he produced and directed the Texas Music Festival for the State Fair of Texas.
From 1958-1983 Harry served as Director of Pageantry for the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association.
He produced and directed all activities during pre-game and half-time of the New Year’s Day Cotton Bowl Classic.
Harry was Musical Director of Six Flags Over Texas from 1961-1967. During this time he organized the Six Flags Over Texas Music Festival.
Harry has been an active member of TMEA, TBA, and Phi Beta Mu.
Harry Barton resides in Dallas, Texas.
