Local Coalitions: The First Steps

Step One: Identify the need.

1. Call together all local district music teachers and discuss local district needs. Key person (music teacher, parent, concerned citizen) can call the meeting.

2. Get Action Kit for Music Education (available from MENC). Review all materials.

3. Plan local kick-off meeting for core group of music teachers and prediscovered local support people.

4. Hold meeting #1.

Step Two: Develop local action plan.

1. Introduce members of core group and elect chairperson. (Meeting #1)

2. Outline briefly local needs as identified by preliminary meeting.

3. View video tapes in Action Kit for Music Education.

4. Using the Building Support for School Music (included in the Action Kit for Music Education) book as an outline and idea-starter for local action, establish limited, yet specific, goals and time frame for accomplishment of your local plan.

5. Establish communication "tree" with key members of local advocacy group.

Step Three: Implement Local Action Plan.

1. Expand those "officially" in the group to spread the word and carry out the local plan.

2. Organize advocates to participate in the election and budget process of the local school board.

3. Publicize efforts, especially rally support, for all music and art events (shows, concerts, etc.).
